Knife Making Supplies
When you are going to build or make a knife on your own you need a few supplies. You need some metal to make the blades out of. A good steel to use for making the blades is the 440 series of stainless steel. This is a great steel to use. It's strong and won't rust. It is very strong when torque is put on it from the vertical and horizontal directions.
Also you need to have some different woods for the handle. It doesn't have to be an exotic wood; you just need a wood that is sturdy enough for whatever you will use the knife for. You can use maple or even walnut, you can use cedar as it is a strong wood, but weighs a lot. Basically, just use any wood that you can hit with a blunt object and won't leave a big dent, and is personally appealing to you. You don't want to have a nice knife with a handle made out of cherry that dents as soon as you drop it.
You always want a good knife sharpener around to. If you don't keep your knives nice and sharp there isn't much use for them if they can't cut anything. Keeping your knives sharp is a great idea as you never know when you will need it to cut something.
You can use a variety of hammers to beat the metal into a knife shape after heating it up. But for forging you should use a specially made hammer. You also want a part of tongs to hold the metal and to use when you're at the stage where you continually bend the metal over itself. You may need a variety of tools to use, most of which you can substitute things that you have around then house.
