If you are going to go tanning in the sun you should only start for about 15 minutes. Then, only add 5 to 10 minutes each consecutive day. This reduces the risk of getting sun burned. That way even if you do tan you won't hurt your skin too much. But when you are tanning try to stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., this is the time frame where you have the highest chance of burning as the sun is at its hottest.
Whenever you are in the sun you should always wear sunscreen. If you burn you skin a lot, or never wear sunscreen you run the risk of getting skin cancer later on in life. You should always wear sunscreen that has a UV protective agent. Especially when you are beginning to tan, constantly burning will ruin your skin as you get older.
If you must tan without the sun, tanning booths are safe as long as you wear something to protect yourself from the UV rays and don't stay under the light too long. Just because you aren't in the sun doesn't mean you can't get burnt. The lights are capable of burning just like the sun.
If you are susceptible to getting burnt, here are some ways that will help to lessen the pain. You should take a nice cool bath/shower and dry yourself with a soft towel, make sure you pat yourself dry don't just rub yourself dry that could end up making the burn worse. And you should cover it with an Aloe Vera gel. This will help to ease the pain from the burn. If anything happens that is irregular you should check with a doctor to make sure everything is alright.
